This MCLE will highlight the stories of Latin X lawyers and other professionals. This program is a continuation of a series which will simply lay bare individual narratives of struggle by judges and attorneys from the LatinX community. These are not just stories, they are our stories that need to be heard.

We can all use a break. CLA is offering monthly come-as-you-are, informal opportunities to chat with fellow attorneys from around the state via Zoom. We’ll offer light-hearted topics for discussion but beyond a chance to celebrate or commiserate with friends and colleagues, there’s no agenda just community.

This event will explore the long-hidden WWII program of kidnapping, indefinite incarceration, and hostage exchange of Japanese Latin Americans. Over 2,200 immigrant residents and citizens of Japanese ancestry from 13 Latin American countries were imprisoned in US concentration camps, with over 800 people deported to Japan for hostage exchanges.

Anti-Asian violence is not new -- it has permeated the entire history of Asians in the U.S. But the wave of anti-Asian violence during the past year has found Asian American women in the bulls-eye, including the horrific shootings in Atlanta.

Systemic racism -- sometimes called institutional or structural racism -- can be defined as a form of racism woven into society through laws and institutions that treat people differently based on race, contributing to perpetual inequalities in power, wealth, education, medical care, housing, dignity, and opportunity.
