Hidden History: WWII Rendition of Japanese Latin Americans
May 19, 2021 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
Free event supported by the CLA Racial Justice Committee
This event will explore the long-hidden WWII program of kidnapping, indefinite incarceration, and hostage exchange of Japanese Latin Americans. Over 2,200 immigrant residents and citizens of Japanese ancestry from 13 Latin American countries were imprisoned in US concentration camps, with over 800 people deported to Japan for hostage exchanges. This event will cover an international body’s recent finding of violation by the US, and will touch on related current issues like border detention and Black and JLA reparations, to be explored later in the 2021 Speaker Series. Please join us on May 19, 2021 to hear the story of these Japanese Latin Americans and their ongoing struggle for justice.
