Labor and Employment Law Pro Bono Achievement Award 

This award will be presented to an individual or team whose pro bono efforts have improved the circumstances of others and changed lives for the better in our community through the field of labor and employment law. The Awards Committee will consider significant contributions to or significant impact on labor and employment law through pro bono activities; demonstrated leadership in the labor and employment law bar, the legal profession, and/or the California community; awardees may be an individual or team, so long as at least one of the team members is a member of the CLA Labor and Employment Law Section. While achievements over an individual’s career will be considered, special consideration shall be given to case decisions and other accomplishments in the 2-3 years preceding the award year.

The Labor and Employment Law Pro Bono Achievement Award will be presented at the Annual Conference and Advanced Wage and Hour Conference on July 24-25, 2025.

Deadline for nominations: June 1, 2025.

Eligibility

Nominees must be a member of the CLA Labor and Employment Law section; self-nominations not accepted.

To be eligible, the recipient need not be in California but the pro bono efforts for which the award will be given for distinguished pro bono service to the public, the judiciary, or the legal profession must change lives for the better in the California community through the field of labor and employment law.

Deadline

The deadline to submit a nomination is June 1, 2025.

Nomination Materials

To submit a nomination, provide the following necessary materials:

  • A completed nomination form
  • Letters of recommendation (1 min, 3 max)
  • Resume
  • Supporting materials (decisions, articles, etc) (optional)

2024 Labor and Employment Law Pro Bono Achievement Award Recipient: Erik T. Johnson

Erik Johnson is a member of Wilson Turner Kosmo, LLP’s Employment Law and Class Action practice groups. He has spent his legal career advising and defending employers ranging from family businesses to multinational companies on a variety of labor and management matters, including discrimination, harassment, retaliation, wrongful termination, unfair competition, and wage and hour claims.

Erik has extensive experience litigating in California’s state and federal courts at both the trial and appellate level. He has also successfully represented clients before a broad array of state and federal administrative agencies and alternative dispute resolution (“ADR”) providers. His ADR experience includes defending against mass arbitrations, and he recently spearheaded the defense of arbitration claims made against a publicly traded company by claimants around the world.

In addition to litigation, Erik counsels employers on effective ways to reduce their risk of litigation through policy changes, employee handbook updates and revisions, compliant leaves of absence, workplace investigations, discipline and terminations, employment agreements, enforceable arbitration agreements, and other human resource issues and strategies.
