Labor and Employment Law
Message from the Chair Erich Shiners
As we grapple with the implications of George Floyd’s death, I urge us all to act with compassion and respect. Remember that for many of us, the events of the past few weeks raise strong emotions. Realize that actions and speech may be fueled by those emotions. Recognize that people process strong emotions in different ways. But as we acknowledge and celebrate each other’s differences, it is more important to appreciate and build on our commonalities as human beings. Only a truly inclusive society can create a social contract with equal rights and obligations.
Over the past weeks CLA leadership has been discussing ways the organization can help address racial injustice. We are exploring ways to educate the public, train lawyers on race-related legal issues, and advocate for systemic change. If you would like to be involved in these efforts or have suggestions or thoughts, please email me at e_shiners@u.pacific.edu. You can also access racial justice resources here: CLA Community Platform regarding racial injustice and reform. Stay safe and be well!
