Message From the Chair

Michael E. Whitaker is a Supervising Deputy Attorney General with the California Department of Justice in Los Angeles. Michael received his B.A., with Distinction, in Political Science from the University of Hawaii. He obtained his J.D. from the University of Oregon School of Law, and served as a Managing Editor for the Oregon Law Review. As a Deputy Attorney General, Michael was the lead counsel in Thomas v. Department of Corrections, 77 Cal. App. 4th 507 (2000)âthe first California appellate opinion defining the term "adverse employment action" under the Fair Employment and Housing Act. He also has served on the City of Culver City Civil Service Commission from 2006-2014.

As I write my first Chair Message, one thought that continually crosses my mind is: "How did I get to this point? How does a kid from Hawaii like me end up being Chair of the California State Bar’s Labor and Employment Law Section?" Sometimes it is surreal.
