FLEXCOM Lifetime Achievement Award: Honoring Commissioner Louise Bayles-Fightmaster
Sherry Peterson
Commissioner Louise Bayles-Fightmaster recently told me, "Never doubt what we do makes a difference, and never be afraid to think outside the box to solve a problem."
Convinced she could never complete law school, Commissioner Bayles-Fightmaster was finally encouraged to take the LSATs by friends. She worked full time through law school where her passion for helping the downtrodden was ignited, as well as discovering she had an amazing gift for writing.
Starting off as a VISTA volunteer, she struggled personally with the image of attorneys and the practice of family law in California. Despite this, she was convinced there had to be a way to integrate her desire to make it easier for the self-represented litigant to navigate the legal process. Then, she was introduced to the concept of mediation and she found a way to bridge that gap.
