Los Angeles, CA—On March 4, 2023, Presiding Judge Sharon Velzy (Van Nuys District Office), Judge Josephine Broussard (Santa Ana District Office), applicant’s attorney Amy Shen and defense attorney, Saro Kerkonian of the CLA, Workers’ Compensation Section Executive Committee, Community Outreach Subcommittee, participated in Southwestern Law School’s Succeeding in Law event.

The annual event brings together hundreds of currently enrolled and prospective law students of diverse community backgrounds to learn about the various careers in the legal profession and how a law school education will help to achieve their goals in the legal field.  This year, the event was presented virtually and once again drew large participation.  The event is split into two segments where a judge, law professor or practicing attorney addresses the entire group and then the students participate in a speed networking format where students can meet in a breakout session with several practitioners in a legal field of their choice, ask questions, and learn more about a specific field of law.  Many students participated in the workers’ compensation section’s breakout room, where they had a chance to learn about the practice of workers’ compensation and the different opportunities a career in the workers’ compensation field presents.

“This annual program at Southwestern is a fantastic opportunity to introduce current and prospective law students to consider a career in the workers’ compensation field.  Many of the students have little or no knowledge about what our practice area entails.  We thank Southwestern Law for inviting us to participate each year in this worthwhile event where, hopefully, we have sparked interest in pursuing a career in California’s Workers’ Compensation system,” said Community Outreach Chairwoman, Amy Shen.
