It is beyond obvious that computers have radically changed commercial practices. Something more than the traditional paper instruments is needed in a world where asparagus loaded being loaded on a plane at LAX will be on a dinner plate in Tokyo the next evening. This need is filled by documents produced on and exchanged by computer. Some of these changes employing computers go beyond the production and exchange of documents and instruments and constitute electronic assets with or representing value, such as virtual currency. It has been an honor to serve as Chair of the Business Law Section (BLS) during this challenging year. The BLS has a long and vibrant history going back to 1977, as part of the State Bar of California, and now as part of the California Lawyers Association (CLA). The BLS has around 7,000 members from across the state. The theme of the 2019-2020 CLA/State Bar year is Part of Something Bigger Than Ourselves. Read more

Former BLS Chair Uzzi Raanan has been elected by the California Lawyers Association Board as the CLA Secretary for 2020-21. He also serves as the BLS Representative to the CLA Board. Read more
On Friday, June 19, 2020, the Executive Committee of the Business Law Section approved the formation of a working group to consider whether—and if so, how— California business lawyers should or could support stakeholder capitalism and the investment trend known as ESG (Environment, Social, Governance), a standard used by a number of investors to screen investments based on those factors. Read more
The California Lawyers Association (CLA) Business Law Section (BLS) is looking forward to participating in the CLA Annual Meeting, which will be virtual this year, between September 24-26, 2020. The Annual Meeting includes MCLE courses and opportunities to network over coffee with other attorneys practicing in business law and other fields. Read more
