Executive Committee: Message from the Chair

Corey R. Weber

Business Law Section (BLS) members, I am honored to serve as the Chair of the BLS for the 2019-2020 California Lawyers Association (CLA)/Bar year! The theme for the BLS this year is Serving the Community: Part of Something Bigger Than Ourselves.

The role of lawyers in the judicial system is important, not only in advocating for clients’ interests, but also ensuring the administration of justice, protecting the rule of law, and serving as officers of the court. The CLA and the BLS work with lawyers, judges, and local bar associations to improve the administration of justice, promote civics education in schools, and protect the rule of law through education and community service events.

The BLS will work hard this year to fulfill the CLA’s mission of promoting excellence, diversity, and inclusion in the legal profession and fairness in the administration of justice and the rule of law. We need your involvement to accomplish those goals and invite you to apply to join one of the BLS’s standing committees.

The BLS has fifteen standing committees, including the Business Law News Editorial Board:

Agribusiness
Business Law News Editorial Board
Business Litigation
Commercial Transactions
Consumer Financial Services
Corporations
Financial Institutions
Franchise Law
Health Law
Insolvency Law
Insurance Law
Internet and Privacy Law
Nonprofit Organizations
Opinions
Partnerships and Limited Liability Companies

Joining a BLS standing committee provides the ability to draft California legislation that is important to your area of practice, to speak on panels at MCLE in-person programs and webinars, to prepare articles on recent case law, legislative, or regulatory updates that are read by attorneys and judges, and to serve by keeping the business law community up-to-date on recent developments in case law, statutes, and regulations. We also welcome your involvement in writing articles for the BLN or by serving as an editor on the BLN Editorial Board.

To learn more about the BLS, to apply to serve as a member or advisor for one of the standing committees, or to serve as an editor on the BLN Editorial Board, go to the BLS website https://calawyers.org/section/business-law/ or e-mail me at cweber@bg.law.

Thank you for your membership in the BLS, and I look forward to having you become an active part of the BLS!

Best Regards,

Corey R. Weber
