Work Smart, And Hard… But Have Some Fun, Too: CLA’s Labor and Employment Section Public Sector Conference May 2

If your work involves labor, employment, public entities or public employees in California, California Lawyers Association’s (CLA) Labor and Employment Law Section Public Sector Conference is a must-attend event.
The 30th Annual Conference will be held on May 2, 2025, at the Hilton Arden West in Sacramento, bringing together attorneys who represent public entities, public employees, and/or labor unions, as well as in-house counsel, and labor and employment practitioners throughout California.
The Public Sector Conference is designed for attendees interested in the latest developments in California public sector labor and employment law. Participants may earn up to 6.25 hours of MCLE credit, including 2.0 hours of elimination of bias and 1.25 hours of ethics education.
Justice Kelli M. Evans, Associate Justice of the California Supreme Court, will serve as keynote speaker, and the conference will provide an interesting and critical array of sessions featuring experts in recent court decisions, legislation, and administrative decisions impacting the practice of law as well as the perennial topics practitioners face in this field. Representatives from the Public Employment Relations Board will provide updates and insights imperative for professionals working in California public sector labor relations.
“This is a unique area of the law, and it is critical for attorneys in this specialty to keep apprised of legal developments and engage with key stakeholders in this area of the law,” explains Susan Garea, Conference Committee Chair. “The Conference will highlight emerging issues, cases and legislation practitioners must grapple with.”
Scholarships are being offered to the event. “We want to be a resources for new attorneys, students, and people who want a career in this field,” says Garea, who explains that a key mission of CLA’s Labor and Employment Law Section is to provide diverse educational opportunities and mentorship.
Approximately 200 people are expected to attend the day-long event, which also includes breaks and a hosted reception designed for networking. Garea notes that California public sector labor and employment law can be considered a small sphere in many ways.
“You might meet someone at the conference that you are in opposition with, but at the end of the day, we all have mutual respect for each other, and we learn from shared experiences, says Garea. “The conference, fosters much needed collegiality.”
