Susan Rubio

California Lawyers Association (CLA) is pleased to honor California Senator Susan Rubio with CLA’s Legislator of the Year Award and acknowledge her extraordinary service since being elected to the California Senate in 2018.

CLA will present the award to Sen. Rubio (D-Baldwin Park) at its annual Legislative Day on April 3 in Sacramento. Legislative Day brings attorneys from all practice areas together to advocate, educate, and interact with key decision makers from all three branches of government. Register here to attend.

Sen. Rubio, born in Juarez, Mexico, taught public school for 17 years and was an elected official for the City of Baldwin Park for 13 years. She represents the 22nd Senate District in eastern Los Angeles County. She was tapped to serve as part of Senate Leadership, serving as Assistant Majority Whip, is the first Latina to serve as Chair of the Senate Insurance Committee, is Chair of the Senate Select Committee on Domestic Violence, and is a member of the Governor’s Council on Holocaust and Genocide Education.

Among her accomplishments since joining the Legislature, Sen. Rubio has prioritized addressing the affordable housing shortage and homelessness crisis, championed the environment, worked on strengthening our education system, supported nonprofits and small businesses, and successfully fought for legislation to protect victims of domestic violence. She was the driving force behind legislation that would have authorized electronic recording of any civil case when an official court reporter is unavailable, Sen. Rubio’s SB 662, a bill that CLA strongly supported.
