Please join the Nonprofit Organizations Committee for a program on the topic:  Don’t Panic – It’s Just an IRS Audit:  Guidelines for being Prepared in Case the IRS Comes Knocking.

Topics to be covered include: 

  1. Being ready for an audit
  2. First steps once notice of an audit is received
  3. Working with the revenue agent
  4. Best practices for responding to IDRs
  5. Working with the Board during an audit
  6. Getting to a successful resolution 

The program will be presented by Sharon Lincoln.  Sharon C. Lincoln is a Partner at Casner & Edwards, LLP and advises nonprofit entities on the wide range of issues related to their tax-exempt status, including formation, funding, governance, executive compensation (including deferred compensation), regulatory compliance, restructuring, international grant making, lobbying, unrelated business income, tax opinions, and mergers & acquisitions.  In addition, Sharon assists clients in matters directly involving the Internal Revenue Service, the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office, and the Massachusetts Department of Revenue, including audits, appeals and ruling requests.  She is admitted to practice in Massachusetts, California and also before the U.S. Tax Court where she advises clients with regard to tax-related litigation.  Sharon also assists clients with planning and structuring new social ventures. To that end, she keeps track of developments that affect social entrepreneurs, including guidance regarding benefit corporations and other “hybrid” entities.  Prior to joining Casner & Edwards, Sharon was the Chair of Foley Hoag LLP’s Nonprofit/Social Venture Practice group in Boston.  Sharon graduated from Harvard Law School and Dartmouth College and she is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation.
