SSF Friends,

March was a busy month for California Lawyers Association and the Solo & Small Firm Section. We hope yours was busy, too (in a good way!)

#SSFSupports

SSF put on the very first event to occur at the new CLA Sacramento office on March 15. It was also the first of our new Signature programs, the “Symposium for Solo Success” which focuses on the four cornerstones every solo and small firm practitioner needs on how to open, manage, grow and use tech for your office!

The event was sold out in-person and live streamed across the state. Thank you to all who attended, we hope you learned a lot and felt supported in your business of law. The event could not have been possible without our terrific speakers and our Annual SSF Sponsors: The Law Office of Jennifer F. Novak, Environmental Law; Law Offices of Sotera L. Anderson, California Lemon Law Attorney; and Stackhouse, APC, Plaintiff’s Personal Injury and Military Defense.

We’re partnering up next with our friends at the Business Law Section for an event in Santa Barbara on Friday, May 17. The afternoon program time will let you get your morning court hearings out of the way, then come learn all about modern communications such as emojis and texting, ADA compliance for your website and how to avoid communication burn-out! Make a weekend out of it and recharge your batteries in Santa Barbara!

#SSFSpeaksOut

On March 15, we found out that the State Bar Malpractice Insurance Group Report had been filed and was not recommending mandatory insurance at this time. SSF and Worker’s Comp Section had previously written a letter expressing concerns about such a requirement on behalf of our members.

CLA hosted its first Legislative Day at the Capitol on March 20. The Sections were able to meet with Cory Jasperson, Director of Governmental Affairs, Judicial Council of California, Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson, Chair, Senate Judiciary Committee, Assembly Member Mark Stone, Chair, Assembly Judiciary Committee, Assembly Member Ash Kalra, Member, Assembly Judiciary Committee, Senator Andreas Borgeas, Vice-Chair, Senate Judiciary Committee, and Che Salinas, Chief Deputy Legislative Affairs Secretary for Operations, Governor’s Office.  Topics ranged from potential taxes on legal services to the proposed fee increase by The State Bar of California to the continued effect of Dynamex on various industries. It was a great way to feel welcomed into CLA’s new home in Sacramento.

#SSFShines

We’re still so excited to be celebrating three remarkable women in June at the Excellence Awards reception during the Solo and Small Firm Summit. I hope you’ll join me as a “Friend” sponsor to let the recipients know that you support them. You can do so here.

#IAmSSF #YouAreSSF #WeAreSSF

With every event, with every application, with every piece of advocacy, I have the pleasure of meeting more and more of you- our Section members. It is such a pleasure and honor to be able to do so, and to make connections across the state that I otherwise would never have made. Thank you for the opportunity and, if we haven’t met yet, I hope to meet you soon.

Your Chair,
Renee N. G. Stackhouse
