California Mandates Paid Sick Leave For All Employees

By Cynthia Elkins

Cynthia Elkins, Principal of Elkins Employment Law, whose practice provides representation to private sector employers on their personnel and employment law matters including litigation defense of employment related lawsuits and administrative claims, and works with employers to ensure compliance with the complex employment laws, drafting employee handbooks and providing advice to guide employers as to their personnel concerns.

One of the most significant pieces of employment-related legislation in 2015 is the Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act of 2014, which provides for mandatory paid sick leave to all employees. This Act (AB 1522) requires an employer to provide paid sick leave to any employee who worked in California for 30 days at an accrual rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, subject to annual and accrued caps. This new law, of course, affects you as an employer, as well your clients’ interests.
