Spotlight on the International ADR Subcommittee

Newly formed in 2021, the International ADR Subcommittee of the Litigation Section’s ADR Committee is focused on international arbitration, international mediation, and other international ADR initiatives. Notably, the Subcommittee’s current focus is the launch of the first California International Arbitration Week, scheduled for March 14 – 18, 2022. The Subcommittee is also working on other international ADR projects including considering legislative revision proposals to California International Arbitration and Conciliation Act (CIACA) and other event programming.

The March 2022 California International Arbitration Week event consists of a series of programs presented under the direction of leading international arbitration institutions from around the world focusing on international arbitration in California. See further details above in this newsletter. The Subcommittee is busy with program planning and sponsorship initiatives.

The CIACA legislative initiative is directed to updating California’s international arbitration law to conform to the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law’s model law amendments and to consider other modernization improvements. Additionally, the Subcommittee plans to work in 2022 on other international ADR programming, including international mediation events.

The International ADR Subcommittee reports to the Litigation Section through the ADR Committee and coordinates its initiatives with the International Law and Immigration Section and other CLA Sections where appropriate.
