A one hour joint California Lawyers Association (CLA) / California Arbitration (CalArb.org) program in advance of California International Arbitration Week to introduce CLA members and other practitioners to international arbitration and the advantages of international arbitration compared to litigation for resolving disputes.

Jeffery J. Daar

Jeffery Daar has practiced law since 1982 and is a principal of the law firm Daar & Newman. Jeffery takes a holistic approach to clients’ legal and business issues. His diverse expertise includes strategic planning, complex state and federal litigation, innovative dispute resolution, and international transactions and disputes.  Jeffery’s practice focuses on both litigation and transactional projects.  Jeffery is known for his extensive background in a number of practice areas, including but not limited to cross-border litigation and transactions, class actions, insurance including insurance insolvency, products liability, consumer litigation, unfair competition, appellate work, private post-secondary schools and colleges, and intellectual property. 

While Jeffery is a United States trained lawyer, he has close working relationships with lawyers throughout Europe, Latin America and Asia. This permits him to assemble international legal teams for innovative global solutions to business transactions and disputes.  He regularly handles cross-border disputes and transactions. 

Jeffery is the Chair of the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Committee of the California Lawyers Association and a Past Chair of both The State Bar of California International Law and International Law Section of the Los Angeles County Bar Association.  Jeffery has been appointed by three different Mayors of the City of Los Angeles as a City Commissioner.  He is currently a Los Angeles Ethics Commissioner and has served on the Board of Airport Commissioners for the Los Angeles World Airports and was Chairperson of the Los Angeles Rent Adjustment Commission for 10 years

Jeffery is an internationally recognized speaker and frequently speaks and writes on international law topics. 

Marcus Quintanilla

With offices in San Francisco and Mexico City, Marcus Quintanilla focuses his practice on international arbitration and cross-border litigation.  In over 20 years of practice, Marcus has partnered with in-house counsel and business teams to successfully advance client interests in commercial disputes worth billions of dollars. Combining seasoned counseling and targeted, cost-effective advocacy, Marcus helps businesses achieve long-term strategic objectives through proceedings with the leading arbitral institutions and in the courts, both in the United States and abroad, in English and in Spanish. Clients praise his results-driven approach to disputes that arise out of the technology deals, energy and commodities transactions, joint ventures, and construction projects that link the United States, Latin America, and the Pacific Rim.

Marcus’s clients are energy majors, leading integrated circuit developers and electronics manufacturers, and global leaders in mining, infrastructure, and consumer brands. His representative arbitrations include disputes over nuclear fuel supply contracts, intellectual property licenses, international distributorships, and alleged failures of complex industrial facilities.

Marcus is a founding member of California Arbitration and is active in the Silicon Valley Arbitration and Mediation Center and the St. Thomas More Society of San Francisco. He has lectured on international arbitration at Berkeley Law School, the University of California, Irvine, and the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.  A graduate of Harvard Law School and a former clerk at the Central District of California and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, Marcus is licensed to practice in California, New York, and the District of Colombia.

Ruth Glick

RUTH V GLICK is a full time international and domestic arbitrator with a background as a lawyer, educator and businesswoman.  With over 25 years’ experience, she has resolved a wide variety of complex business contract and tort, cross border investment, financial distributorship, technology, trade secrets, and medical device disputes.  She is on the International Centre for Dispute Resolution (ICDR), Large/Complex Case Arbitration and Mediation panels of the American Arbitration Association (AAA), as well as CPR, and ICC.

Ruth is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FIArb), Fellow of the College of Commercial Arbitrators (CCA), Distinguished Fellow of the International Academy of Mediators (IAM), and Certified Mediator with IMI.  A Northern California Super Lawyer and Best Lawyer, Ruth is a past Chair of the Dispute Resolution Section of the American Bar Association and currently serves on the Council of the American Arbitration Association-International Centre for Dispute Resolution (AAA-ICDR).  See www.ruthvglick.com
