Introducing ESG-in-Law: Empowering California Attorneys

We’re excited to introduce ESG-in-Law, a new YouTube show from CLA’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Interest Group, designed to provide attorneys with interesting, informative content concerning the interactions between the law and ESG practices.

We’ll focus on a broad range of responsible business activities—from methods to properly account for environmental externalities to ways companies can increase their positive social impact.

In the past, businesses implemented corporate social responsibility projects, which have been characterized as gratuitous initiatives that could be withdrawn on a whim. These CSR practices rarely implicated the law since they resulted from voluntary corporate initiatives.

In contrast, a growing body of laws generates real obligations on companies to implement ESG practices into their operations and properly account for their social impact. These are the issues that concern the legal field—and these are the areas where lawyers must be proficient to properly advise their clients in an evolving regulatory landscape.
