Drop into the ‘Wellness Suite’ at the Annual Meeting

As CLA gears up for our first in-person Annual Meeting since 2019 on September 15–17 in San Diego, it’s natural to feel excited and nervous. For lawyers struggling with substance abuse or mental health issues, the hustle and bustle may risk triggering unhealthy behaviors.

CLA’s Health and Wellness Committee is working to ensure members have the resources they need to keep their minds, bodies and spirits in top shape at what is shaping up to be the association’s largest in-person event of the year.

The committee will have a dedicated “Wellness Suite” where attendees can retreat when they need a safe space, said committee member Greg Dorst, a consultant for The Other Bar, a network of recovering lawyers, judges and law students.

The suite will host 12-step style meetings three times a day. It will also be open for drop-in visitors to access snacks, reading materials and programming such as meditation sessions.

“We want to broaden the scope of what we can provide to folks interested in making better choices and learning about how they handle their interior resources,” Dorst said.

CLA established the Health and Wellness Committee in 2020 to provide resources and content to support attorney and law student wellness, including general health, mental health and problematic substance abuse.

Earlier this year, CLA’s Real Property Law Section hosted a retreat dedicated to health and wellness at Lake Tahoe.
