Did You Know? Social Media Campaign

The CLA’s Civics Engagement and Outreach Committee (CEO) launched a social media campaign, Did You Know?, in July 2020. The purpose of this campaign is to bring interesting civic education to the public and our members in a fun, easy-to-digest format. The Committee focuses on one civic topic per month, sometimes aligning the topic with current events or important historic dates.

In October 2025, we celebrate the 80th anniversary of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), an annual recognition of the positive impact of people with disabilities in the American workforce.

Every four years, Americans elect the President and Vice President, and the President is sworn in on January 20th. The President takes the Oath of Office and may serve two terms, consecutive or not. As is the case for President Donald Trump and President Grover Cleveland.
The Public Debt Clause was ratified in 1868, three years after the Civil War ended, and was put in place to ensure that Congress would not simply forgive debts incurred by the Union.
In May, we celebrate the achievements and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Congress expanded the celebration from one week to a full month in 1992.
Juneteenth is a holiday which honors the end of slavery in the United States. The name is short for June 19th. On June 19, 1865 federal troops reached Galveston, Texas to ensure control of the state and that previously enslaved people were freed.
June is celebrated as Pride Month following the Stonewall Uprising. On June 28, 1969 the New York Police Department raided the Stonewall Inn in New York City, a popular gathering spot. The raid triggered riots and spawned the gay rights movement. In 2016 President Obama dedicated an area near and including the Stonewall Inn as the Stonewall National Monument.
On August 6, 1965 President Lyndon Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act into law, ending barriers to prevent African Americans from voting. Such barriers included legally mandated literacy, knowledge and character tests that in effect discriminated against African Americans.
The U.S. Constitution establishes the three-branch system of government—legislative, executive, and judicial—in its first three articles to prevent any single branch from accumulating too much power.
