The Standing Committees of the California Lawyers Association Family Law Section (FLEXCOM) provide attorneys with a unique opportunity to engage in legislative review, collaborate with peers, and contribute to shaping family law and Rules of Court for family law in California. These committees are ideal for attorneys who want to stay informed, develop leadership skills, and actively participate in the legislative process.

What Do Standing Committees Do?

  • Review pending legislation and provide input to FLEXCOM.
  • Provide recommendations on family law proposed Rules of Court and forms.
  • Meet regularly to discuss pending bills, legislative amendments, and policy related to proposed legislation.
  • Encourage diverse perspectives and participation in family law discussions.

Eligibility & Structure

  • Each Standing Committee has a Chairperson or Co-Chairs who are members of the Family Law Section.
  • Officers are expected to serve a term of at least one-year, but this is often extended depending on the committee’s needs.
  • Committees must adhere to CLA’s parameters and operate within FLEXCOM’s purview.

What Standing Committees Cannot Do

  • Enter into contracts or agreements.
  • Offer CLE programs independently.
  • Publish materials without approval.
  • Collaborate with external entities without CLA authorization.

Meeting Commitments & Participation

  • Standing Committees must meet regularly in person or virtually.
  • Chairpersons are encouraged to attend three FLEXCOM meetings annually, and can alternate attendance as such meetings with their co-chair, such as:
  • CLA Annual Meeting, if appropriate,
  • Pre-Legislation Overview & Preparation (Fall)
  • Legislation Review (March & April)
  • Travel and lodging for required meetings are reimbursed.
