Don’t Sweat It: eDiscovery Bootcamp Showcases Latest Legal Technology

April 2025

It’s in the news. It’s addressed in the law. And it’s vital to the legal profession. The “it” are technology advancements, particularly those involving Artificial Intelligence (AI). As legal professionals, how do you navigate these increasingly complicated developments— from forensics and document review to broader practice innovations—to make the best decisions for your practice needs?

California Lawyers Association’s (CLA) Law Practice Management and Technology Section (LPMT) invites you to attend its eDiscovery Tech Bootcamp on Saturday, April 12 at Santa Ana College in Santa Ana, California. CLA is partnering with Women in eDiscovery to bring CLA members and guests this free event featuring hands-on, live demos of industry leading tools that assist attorneys and people working in the legal profession.

The event is focused in two areas involving ESI, or electronically stored information. First, experts will share how to collect evidence from client’s various systems, such as text messages, social media, emails, calendar items, and chats. Second, and equally important, participants will learn how to utilize document review technology platforms to efficiently review case evidence and produce it.

“This is a showcase of valuable legal technology which provides a wide range of solutions,” explains Shannon Bales, LPMT Section Chair. “Until now, there hasn’t been a lot of formalized technology information provided directly to the legal field. We believe it’s so important that we are offering this conference at no cost.”

Specialists in the AI industry will showcase tools such as Relativity, DISCO, Everlaw, CloudNine Review, and OpenText. Technologists will also teach attendees how to collect data from Google, Microsoft, cellphones, Slack, and social media. Hands-on exercises will be offered in special set-up labs. The sessions will conclude with a social event, providing additional opportunities to engage.

CLA LMPT member and chair for the eDiscovery Bootcamp, Lauren Doucetter, says that a focus of the event is place on the solo or small firm practitioner. “We will provide side-by-side comparisons of many different tools to help attorneys learn what is best for them. All of the platforms are incredibly user friendly.” She adds, “You shouldn’t have to take a day-long course, and receive a training certificate, in order to use a piece of software. We are providing practical and cost effective solutions to make your practice more efficient.”

Both Bales and Doucetter believe it is essential to provide attorneys with education and growth opportunities. “We want to bridge the gap between access and cutting edge software by offering it all in one place,” says Bales.

CLA’s event partner, Women in eDiscovery, is a nonprofit organization that brings together women around the world who are interested in technology related to the legal industry. Its goal is to provide opportunities to unite professionals, empower growth, and celebrate excellence in legal technology services.

In addition to the learning programs, CLA is providing a recruiter’s roundtable to assist people interested in careers within the legal technology field. Resumes will be accepted and potential employment opportunities will be made available.

Kim Smith, Esq, Co-Chair for Santa Ana College’s Legal Studies Department, has provide valuable assistance in organizing the activities. “The Santa Ana College Legal Studies program has long seen the value in emphasizing technology skills and interacting with industry groups. We are thrilled to host CLA’s LPMT Section and WIE at the college and know that students everywhere will benefit.” She continues, “Encouraging a robust learning environment that includes industry is vital to the educational opportunities available at Santa Ana College. We are excited to host this event, which will become part of our Fall 2025 launch of a Bachelor of Arts in Paralegal Studies. This will be the first BA in Paralegal Studies at a public institution in California, offering classes online and in the evening to suit working professionals. “

The LPMT Section is CLA’s only Section exclusively devoted to the practical aspects of starting, growing, and prospering in a law practice. Its goal is to help attorneys run their practices more efficiently. They do this by giving exclusive access to time-proven methods and the latest innovations in law office administration, financial management, legal ethics and time management, among numerous other subjects.
