Spotlight on the Supreme Court Luncheon
Thursday, October 10, 12:15 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. — Program #76
Spotlight on the Supreme Court is a CLA signature event during which attendees get to know our California Supreme Court Justices while enjoying lunch. This year, the program will feature a lively conversation with the Court’s longest serving and newest justices, Justice Ming Chin and Justice Joshua Groban. Two seasoned appellate attorneys, Reuben Ginsburg and Katy Graham, will interview these two prominent justices.
$55 Ticket Fee.
Justice Ming W. Chin became an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of California in March 1996 after his appointment by Governor Pete Wilson. He previously served as the Presiding Justice of the First District Court of Appeal, Division Three, in San Francisco. Prior to serving on the appellate bench, Justice Chin was a judge of the Alameda County Superior Court. Before his appointment to the bench, Justice Chin was a partner in an Oakland law firm, where he specialized in business and commercial litigation.
Justice Joshua P. Groban began his term as an Associate Justice on the California Supreme Court in January 2019. Prior to taking the bench, Justice Groban served as the Senior Advisor to Governor Jerry Brown, advising the governor on judicial appointments, legal policy and legislative issues. Justice Groban received numerous awards from bar groups and other legal organizations for his work on judicial appointments. Justice Groban has taught State Appellate Practice at the UCLA School of Law. Prior to working for the governor’s office, Justice Groban was a private practitioner, specializing in complex civil litigation, with a focus on antitrust, internal investigations, and intellectual property.
Annual Meeting Opening Night Awards Reception

The California Lawyers Association (CLA) will kick off its second Annual Meeting with a complimentary welcome reception and awards presentation. There will be 5 awards presented during the Opening Reception which include the Jack Berman Award, 3 Diversity Awards and the Loren Miller Award. Complimentary for Registered Attendees.

While the proliferation of cloud and mobile technologies has increased productivity for lawyers, it has also added to their data security concerns. Law firm data management policies must combine federal and international data protection rules with professional standards of client confidentiality – but mere compliance with existing rules and standards is not enough. Jared Correia will discuss the increasing expectations for client data security, including best practices for the changing law firm environment and practical suggestions and tools for anticipating and implementing these practices.

Join us as we highlight the “Power of Democracy” campaign launched by California Supreme Court Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye. CLA will host local elementary school students in an interactive program designed to underscore the importance of civic engagement to maintaining a vibrant and healthy society. Justice Judith McConnell, Chair, Power of Democracy Steering Committee, will moderate the program. School-aged children of Annual Meeting attendees are welcome and will receive a complimentary lunch. Annual Alexander F. Morrison Lecture
Friday, October 11, 12:30 p.m. – 1:45 p.m. — Program #81
Named for attorney and founding partner of Morrison & Foerster, the Alexander F. Morrison Lecture Series was instituted in 1930 for the purpose of delivering scholarly presentations to California lawyers on pressing topics of the day. CLA is pleased to announce the selection of Dean Erwin Chemerinsky as the 2019 Morrison Lecturer. Since July 2017, Erwin Chemerinsky has been the Dean of Berkeley Law, where he also serves as the Jesse H. Choper Distinguished Professor of Law. Before assuming his current role at Berkeley, Dean Chemerinsky was the founding dean and a distinguished law professor at University of California, Irvine School of Law. Dean Chemerinsky has also served as a professor of law at Duke University, University of Southern California Law School, DePaul College of Law and UCLA Law School. Dean Chemerinsky is a prolific author of casebooks, treatises, articles and other writings, making him one of the most frequently cited legal scholars in the nation.

CYLA BBQ, Brews and Bocce President’s and Chair’s Reception
Saturday, October 12, 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. — Program #82
Join California Young Lawyers Association for a fun night playing bocce and tasting the many beers of Monterey. This event is an opportunity to meet and greet CLA and CYLA leadership in a lively atmosphere with BBQ styled food, a brew master discussing the beer and food pairings and a game of bocce.
