CLA successfully advocated in support of the enactment of legislation that increased funding for programs established under California’s Sargent Shriver Civil Counsel Act. The Shriver Act established funding for pilot programs, providing representation of counsel for low-income persons who require legal services in specified civil matters, including tenants facing eviction, parents involved in child custody disputes, and families in urgent need of guardianships or conservatorships. The increase in funding was vital in order to continue offering legal representation to litigants who are most vulnerable. Read more

By Ona Dosunmu. Yay! It’s summer. For me that means getting out on my bike. My bicycle was one of the first items I shipped to my new home in Sacramento and one of the first items I received. Of course, I had every intention of riding back in January, but life happened. I finally went for my first ride over the long Memorial Day weekend. There’s something exhilarating about discovering a new city on two wheels and my May ride did not disappoint. It was also sobering. Read more
The United States District Court, Central District of California, is currently accepting applications from qualified individuals interested in serving as Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference Lawyer Representatives. The selected lawyer representatives will be representative of the entire district and reflect the diversity of lawyers practicing before the court. Read more

Many CLA members have joined one of our 16 terrific Sections because they want to advance professionally, make contributions to their areas of practice, and participate in cutting-edge programs and publications. Others went to law school and are active in Associations like CLA to contribute to social justice and advocate for forward thinking policy. High on the list of concerns is the continuing lack of diversity among lawyers and judges and the challenges to Californians in accessing critical legal services on fundamental issues such as education, housing, and immigration.
