Message from the Chair

By Chris Campbell

Greetings Taxation Section Members! When I last wrote in April we were in the middle of the Stay at Home Order and circumstances were changing daily. The Executive Committee was getting its arms around the effects that this pandemic would have on our programming and on our mission generally. I am thankful to have such a hardworking team—the Executive Committee, our Standing Committees, the CLA—dedicated to continuing our work during this challenging time, and pivoting our events to a virtual format. I am very excited to announce that our 2020 Annual Meeting of the California Tax Bar and California Tax Policy Conference is happening on November 5 and 6, and it will be virtual! Details below and to follow.

But let’s start with a few updates regarding appointments and elections. First, congratulations to Jackie Zumaeta. At our June meeting, Jackie was elected as Incoming Chair of the Taxation Section, which means she will be Chair starting in the fall of 2021. I have had the pleasure of working with Jackie for several years. She brings the highest level of energy, enthusiasm and engagement, along with a strong work ethic, to all committee meetings, to the projects she has owned, (and to any party with a karaoke machine or a Heads Up game). Jackie is a natural leader and I am thrilled that she will be Chair. I can and do say all of the same things about Laura Buckley, who will take over from me as Chair this fall. The Section is definitely in great hands for the next two years.

During our June meeting we also selected five outstanding new members from an impressive group of applicants. Our newest members are: Saba Shatara, Managing Associate, Multistate Tax, Deloitte; Annette Nellen, Director, MST Program, San Jose State University; Myriam Bouaziz, Deputy Director of Legislation, Office of Tax Appeals; Kathryn Meyer, Area Counsel (Area 7), Senior Executive Service, Office of Chief Counsel, Internal Revenue Service, Small Business Self-Employed; and, Thomas Giordano-Lascari, Partner, Karlin & Peebles, LLP. On behalf of the Executive Committee, congratulations to each of you! We look forward to welcoming you at our next meeting in September.
