MESSAGE FROM THE VICE-CHAIR

Written by Jackie Zumaeta Vice-Chair

Happy 2022, Taxation Section members! It is my honor to write to you this month as the vice chair of the Taxation Section of the CLA. I know we are all adapting to a new normal as the pandemic continues to throw challenges our way. Many of us are working in a hybrid or even completely remote environment now, so the opportunity to connect with one another, via this section and our many events, both in-person and virtual, is more important than ever. In order to facilitate the production of these events, the Executive Committee has continued to meet regularly in a hybrid format with some members choosing to participate in-person and others choosing to brave the two long days of a Zoom meeting. We cannot thank our standing committee chairs, many of whom attended our September 2021 meeting either in-person or virtually, enough for all that they and their committees do to continue to produce events that allow us all to both learn and network with our colleagues. If you’re interested in joining a standing committee, now is the time to make contact! I am always happy to chat with you or you can contact the leadership of your favorite standing committee directly to discuss opportunities to get involved! Our website also has information pertaining to joining our Executive Committee and our Standing Committees, as well as participating in other programs that allow you to get involved with the Section, including the Odyssey Mentorship Program.

I wanted to take a moment to recap some of the great programming that the Taxation Section has put on over the last several months. On July 15, 2021, the Income and Other Standing Committee held its annual Income Tax Seminar. This year the event was held virtually in a half-day format with four excellent panels. Attendees were able to learn and enjoy panels discussing California controversy trends, the Metropolous Office of Tax Appeals opinion and the sourcing of sales of intangibles, current developments in international penalties, and syndicated conservation easement challenges. The seminar featured distinguished speakers who volunteered their time to provide excellent information to the attendees. If you have a topic that you think would be a good topic for next year’s Income Tax
