Real Property Law

Cal. Real. Prop. Journal 2017, VOL. 35, NO. 1

Message from the Chair

D. Eric Remensperger

Welcome to Issue No. 1 of Volume 35 of the California Real Property Law Journal.

The Real Property Law Section (the "Section"), with approximately 6,500 members, is one of the largest sections of the California State Bar. The Section coordinates educational programs and materials (including through our monthly E-Bulletin and Quarterly Journal) for California’s diverse real estate attorneys, and serves as a forum for communicating information to its members on current developments and trends in real property law. The Section also provides opportunities to network and develop relationships with lawyers and other professionals in the real estate industry. The Section enthusiastically embraces and encourages diversity and inclusion in Section membership.

The State Bar is undergoing a structural change to address long-needed reforms including case backlogs, enforcement of disciplinary standards, and expenditure oversight. The change in the organizational structure of the Bar presents a challenge to the Section’s mission to provide educational opportunities and value to its members during and after implementation of the reforms. In his latest message in the California Bar Journal, State Bar President James P. Fox stated we will see a monumental change as the State Bar shifts from an agency with a dual mission—supporting lawyers as a professional association and serving the public—to one that is primarily charged with protecting the public. This shift would separate the practice sections, including the Section, into separate entities.
