In Tom Wolfe’s The Right Stuff, he recounted that this was the entirety of a wildly popular speech astronaut Gus Grissom gave to a group of aerospace workers at the height of the Space Race. It was also one of my mom’s favorite sayings while I was growing up, usually as encouragement to do well on something that required hard work.
