Crim. Law Journal Spring 2018, Vol. 18, Issue 2

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

Welcome to the latest edition of the Criminal Law Journal. Every year the Criminal Law Section of the California Lawyers Association sponsors the Marshall Manne Schulman Writing Competition. The Marshall Manne Schulman Writing Competition is a nationwide writing competition for law students with an emphasis on California specific criminal law and criminal procedure. Prizes include a grand prize of $1500, publication of winning articles in the Criminal Law Journal, and a one-year subscription to the Criminal Law Section. The caliber of the entries from law schools throughout the United States is always impressive.

The competition is named after Marshall Manne Schulman. Mr. Schulman is a criminal defense attorney who practiced in California for more than 60 years. For more than 30 years, he was a member of the Executive Committee of the Criminal Law Section of the State Bar. He taught CLE courses and wrote articles for this Journal. When Mr.Schulman retired from his volunteer work for the Section, it was only fitting to show our appreciation for all his decades of hard work and dedication by naming the writing competition after him.

In this edition of the Criminal Law Journal we have two of the top entries. The first article is the grand prize winning article by Steven Demarest. Mr. Demarest is a third-year law student at New York University. Amber Fountain, Honorable Mention winner, is a graduate of Loyola Law School who has just taken the California Bar Exam. Entries were very closely read and judged by three reviewers who are all advisors to the Criminal Law Section Executive Committee. The reviewers were impressed by the quality and caliber of entries in this year’s competition, and offer their gratitude and encouragement to those students, from law schools throughout the country, who submitted articles.

All law students are cordially invited to participate in the 2018-2019 Competition, www.calawyers.org/Sections/Criminal-Law/Student -Writing-Competition. The deadline for next year’s submissions will be March 1, 2019.
