MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Vice Chair, Leslie Abrigo

Learn a bit more about our members and why they find FLEXCOM to be a great opportunity. This month we are featuring our Vice Chair, Leslie Abrigo.
Question: Share a little about your journey to becoming a family law lawyer, starting your own practice, and motivation for any specialty.
Answer: I started my own law firm as soon as I passed the Bar because I wanted to build something that reflected my values—strategic advocacy, client education, and long-term planning. Over the years, I’ve grown as both an attorney and a business owner, and I later became a founding partner of Genesis Family Law. In just a few short years, we’ve expanded rapidly, now with nine attorneys serving clients throughout California.
One of our core values is mentorship and leadership within the legal community. We encourage our attorneys to lead and serve—not just in the courtroom but also through community engagement, professional development, and bar association involvement.
I developed a specialty in prenuptial agreements because of my research on generational trends within family dynamics. As societal attitudes toward marriage, finances, and independence evolve, so do the needs of couples entering into these agreements. My goal is to help clients create clear, fair, and future-focused agreements that foster financial security and prevent conflict down the road.
Q: How do you maintain balance and well-being while navigating the demands of your career?
A: Balance in family law is challenging, but I’ve learned that boundaries are key. I set clear expectations with clients and prioritize family time, travel, and personal interests to avoid burnout.
I also enjoy cooking, particularly Asian-inspired meals, as well as exploring and appreciating different types of food. Food plays a big role in my life, both as a creative outlet and as a way to connect with my culture and loved ones.
Q: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to young lawyers starting out in family law?
A: Master the art of communication. Family law is deeply personal, and clients need an attorney who can provide clarity, direction, and reassurance in high-stress situations. The ability to explain complex legal issues in a way that makes sense to clients will set you apart.
Also, don’t take things personally. Family law is emotionally charged, and opposing parties often project their frustrations onto attorneys. Staying professional and focused on problem-solving will help you thrive in this field.
Q: How long have you been involved with CLA? What brought you to CLA?
A: I’ve been a member of CLA for many years and have served on the Family Law Executive Committee (FLEXCOM) for the past four years.
FLEXCOM’s mission is to advance the practice of family law in California by:
Shaping family law policy and legislation through advocacy, legislative analysis, and direct engagement with lawmakers.
Providing high-quality continuing legal education (CLE) to help family law attorneys stay informed on legal developments and best practices.
Supporting mentorship and professional development by connecting newer attorneys with experienced practitioners.
Promoting access to justice by working to improve the legal system’s ability to serve families effectively.
I was drawn to CLA because I wanted to be part of the policy discussions and leadership initiatives that shape family law in California. Being involved in FLEXCOM has allowed me to contribute to meaningful changes in our field while supporting attorneys across the state.
Q: What’s your favorite program, event, or initiative within CLA?
A: I’m passionate about our mentorship programs because I know how much guidance early-career attorneys need. It’s rewarding to help newer lawyers build confidence and develop strong practices.
I also support the growth and development of continuing legal education (CLE) because high-quality CLE is essential to keeping family law attorneys informed and well-equipped to serve their clients.
Additionally, I enjoy working on sponsorship efforts to expand CLA’s resources and provide more opportunities for members.
Q: How has CLA impacted your career or professional development?
A: CLA has been instrumental in expanding my network, leadership experience, and professional growth. Through my involvement in mentorship, sponsorships, and event planning, I’ve built strong connections with attorneys and professionals across California.
Being part of policy discussions has also helped me think more strategically about the future of family law, especially as technology and evolving societal trends shape our profession.
