California Delegation to Japan
October 17, 2023 – October 21, 2023
Join the CLA delegation to Japan for visits with Osaka Bar Association, Dai-Ichi Tokyo Bar Association, and Kanagawa Bar Association.
Hotels: Participants must make their own reservations at their own expense.
Participants will stay at least two (2) nights in Osaka (Monday, October 16, and Tuesday, October 17), depending on the date of arrival in Osaka and at least three (3) nights in Tokyo (Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, October 18-20), depending on the date of departure from Tokyo.

Note about hotels: There are many hotels to choose from in both cities. Participants can choose a hotel based on their own preferences. Participants must inform CLA of the hotel choice and location in Osaka and in Tokyo, in order for CLA to coordinate the ground transportation to Kyoto and to and from Yokohama.
Transportation:
Flights to and from Japan: Participants are responsible for making their own travel arrangements to and from Japan. Participants will be expected to be in Osaka, Japan, by no later than the evening of Monday, October 16. Flights to Osaka arrive at either the Kanku (Kansai International) or Itami airports after making a connection in one of the Tokyo airports (Narita or Haneda). Returning flights will depart from one of the Tokyo airports (Narita or Haneda).
Inter-city travel within Japan: Inter-city travel from Osaka to Kyoto and Kyoto to Tokyo on Wednesday, October 18, and travel from Tokyo to Yokohama and back from Yokohama to Tokyo on Friday, October 20, will be arranged by CLA. The cost of that travel is included in the registration. Participants must arrive at the designated meeting location at the designated time each day.
Taxis and ride shares: Transportation to and from participants’ hotels to meetings and events are the responsibility of the participants.

- Reception with the Dai-Ichi Tokyo Bar Association on Thursday evening
- Dinner with the Kanagawa Bar Association on Friday evening
- Inter-city transportation (Osaka to Kyoto, Kyoto to Tokyo, and roundtrip between Tokyo and Yokohama)
- *Plus one registration does not include attendance at the joint seminars in Osaka and Tokyo (if the accompanying “plus one” guests would like to attend the joint seminars, the registration fee will be $690)

Tuesday, October 17th

- Courtesy visit to the Osaka High Court
- Courtesy visit to the Osaka District Court
- Lunch with the Osaka Bar Association leadership and members
- Tour of the Osaka Bar Association building
- Joint Seminar on California Privacy Laws and on Alternative Dispute Resolution
- Evening reception with the Osaka Bar Association
Wednesday, October 18th
- Visit to the Japan International Mediation Center in Kyoto (JIMC-Kyoto), accompanied by the members of the Osaka Bar Association
- Courtesy visit to JIMC-Kyoto at Doshisha University
- Courtesy visit to JIMC-Kyoto at Kodai-ji Temple
- Following the visits to JIMC-Kyoto, travel to Tokyo on the Shinkansen Bullet Train
- Tea ceremony at Kodai-ji Temple
Thursday, October 19th
- Meetings with the Dai-Ichi Tokyo Bar Association – in Tokyo
- Courtesy visit to the Ministry of Justice, accompanied by the members of the Dai-Ichi Tokyo Bar Association
- Courtesy visit to the Supreme Court, accompanied by the members of the Dai-Ichi Tokyo Bar Association
- Lunch with the Dai-Ichi Tokyo Bar Association leadership and members
- Joint Seminar on Alternative Dispute Resolution
- Evening reception with the Dai-Ichi Tokyo Bar Association
Friday, October 20th
- Meetings with the Kanagawa Bar Association — in Yokohama
- Travel to Yokohama (and return to Tokyo the same day)
- Courtesy visit to the Yokohama District Court
- Lunch with the Kanagawa Bar Association leadership and members
- Dinner with the Kanagawa Bar Association members
Saturday, October 21st
Departure from Japan – The organized activities conclude on Friday, October 20, and participants should plan their departure on or after Saturday, October 21. (Please note: Travel to and from Japan is at the participants’ own arrangement and expense.)
