Upcoming SALT Meeting Provides Added “Seasoning”
July 2025
Get the Latest State Tax News, and Earn MCLE Credits, FREE
If you’re a tax attorney, CPA, or financial professional, California Lawyers Association’s (CLA) Annual State and Local Tax (SALT) Committee Meeting is designed specifically for you. Conducted by CLA’s Taxation Section, the two-hour educational event is being held on July 23, 2025. Participants may attend in person at the California Franchise Tax Board in Sacramento, or virtually, and earn 2.0 hours of MCLE/CPE in tax law legal specialization. Registration for the meeting, and education credits valued at nearly $300, are being provided at no cost to participants.
The chief counsels for the California Franchise Tax Board, Department of Tax and Fee Administration, Board of Equalization, and Office of Tax Appeals will each address new developments at their various entities. Legal experts will also share litigation updates, regulation information, and the status of written guidance.
“This is a great opportunity to hear firsthand from people at the state and local tax agencies, and to speak with them directly” says attorney Jaclyn Zumaeta, CLA Taxation Section Advisor. “As a practitioner, you might think you have the most recent knowledge. Not only do participants receive cutting edge news, but they gain insight as to what’s on the horizon in their field. Oftentimes, you learn something that may not be ‘out there’ yet.”
Dozens of hours of planning go into the educational sessions. Zumaeta credits CLA members Campbell McClaren, Deloitte LLP, and Louis Gabriel, Ernst & Young, with doing the “heavy lifting” for this year’s meeting. “They are from ‘The Big 4,’ representing the largest accounting and auditing firms in the world,” says Zumaeta. “They have worked tirelessly.”
Zumaeta, herself, served on CLA’s SALT Committee for several years. “It’s so interesting to discuss litigation and rulemaking with both government agency representatives and the private practitioners who attend. Tax is a very broad discipline, but the community is very small.” She adds, “Everybody is going to have federal and state issues at some point. It is rewarding to get to know everyone. Your level of trust becomes much higher. I think that’s true in so many facets of life.”
Meeting organizers expect about 75 people to attend in-person, with more than 100 choosing to join online. It is important both settings are provided, especially for people who are not able to travel but want to engage.
