The BLS is comprised of 15 Standing Committees, including the BLN Editorial Board, whose members review and propose legislation, draft and edit eBulletins, BLN articles, and practice guides, and speak at live and webinar programs. Membership on a Standing Committee affords unique opportunities to participate in the creation of law in your practice area, to get to know and be known by other practitioners, to work with the recognized leaders in your field and to stay on the cutting edge of developments and practice techniques. It is a rewarding experience that keeps one ahead of and in touch with business law developments. Further, joining the BLN Editorial Board affords one the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the Section in a manner that fits a busy schedule.
Beyond a willingness to contribute, there are few eligibility requirements. All members of the BLS who have been in practice at least five years are eligible to be appointed to a Standing Committee, and the requirement of five years of practice may be waived for members of the BLN Editorial Board. The BLS strives to include members from solo and small practices as well as larger firms, geographical areas outside California’s major urban centers, women and members of ethnic and racial minority groups and other under-represented categories of the BLS’s diverse membership base. The Standing Committees meet between 5 and 10 times each year, usually by telephone. Standing Committees members develop valuable personal and business relationships with other practitioners in their respective industries and fields of practice.
To qualify for membership, a practitioner must be a member of the BLS and have practiced law at least five years. Each committee is comprised of 16-30 members, selected for 3-4 year terms.
