Volunteers are the backbone of professional membership associations and nonprofit organizations. The California Lawyers Association (CLA) would not be the premiere statewide voluntary bar association without its dedicated, passionate volunteers. May 2022 CLA is governed by a 18-member Board of Representatives who each have equal voting power and serve two-year terms.Each section is empowered to nominate one Representative to the Board. The terms are staggered so that approximately half of the Representatives are nominated each year. The California Lawyers Association (CLA) and the District of Columbia Bar (D.C. Bar) shared additional findings today from a groundbreaking research project offering insight into the personal and workplace risk factors for mental health problems, substance use, and attrition among practicing attorneys. In 2020, the two bar associations announced their participation in the project, which has now yielded the second in a series of published papers. Titled "People, Professionals, and Profit Centers: The Connection Between Lawyer Well-Being and Employer Values," the findings were published June 3 in the peer-reviewed scientific journal Behavioral Sciences. CLA is proud to announce that CLA Director of Governmental Affairs Saul Bercovitch has been appointed to the Judicial Council’s Code of Civil Procedure Section 367.9 Working Group by Chief Justice of California and Chair of the Judicial Council Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye. Read more
The California Lawyers Association (CLA) has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to resolve the test that applies to communications between lawyers and their clients involving both legal and nonlegal purposes, known as dual-purpose communications, and when those communications are protected by the attorney-client privilege. CLA supports adoption of the test that provides the most protection to the attorney-client privilege. Read more
The California Rules of Professional Conduct require informed written consent from an affected client under a number of different circumstances involving conflicts of interest. For example, Rule 1.7 requires informed written consent from each client if a lawyer were to represent a client in a matter directly adverse to another current client or whenever there is a significant risk that the lawyer’s representation would be materially limited by the lawyer’s responsibilities or relationships to others or the lawyer’s own interests.
