The California Lawyers Association (CLA) submits these comments expressing our concerns with the proposal under consideration by the Blue Ribbon Commission (BRC) to establish a “non-exam pathway” for licensure to practice law in California as an alternative to the California Bar Exam. For the reasons discussed below, CLA urges the BRC not to recommend a non-exam pathway. At the same time, we encourage the BRC’s continued exploration of other issues under consideration, including potential revisions to the California Bar Exam.  Read more

On October 3, 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear a case involving the application of the attorney-client privilege, which protects the confidentiality of communications between attorneys and their clients. The grant of certiorari was a victory for the California Lawyers Association (CLA), which filed an amicus brief on June 1 urging the court to hear the case. This is the most consequential attorney-client privilege case that will be heard by the U.S. Supreme Court in several decades. Read more

CLA has approximately 72,000 members and is one of the largest statewide voluntary bar associations in the United States. CLA’s mission is promoting excellence, diversity, and inclusion in the legal profession and fairness in the administration of justice and the rule of law. For the reasons discussed below, CLA urges opposition to inclusion of the ENABLERS Act either (1) as an amendment to the Senate’s version of the FY 2023 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), or (2) in any final negotiated package with the House of Representatives.  Read more
Since March 2020, the only thing that has been certain is that we have been living in uncertain times. From the COVID-19 pandemic, protests, remote working, and home-schooling kids to participating in Zoom court and everything in between, we have had to pivot, learn new technology, adjust to new work environments, and adapt to new ways of creating boundaries between our personal and professional lives — just to name a few of the ways we have been impacted. Lawyers and judges took time out of their busy Annual Meeting schedules last month to educate and engage about 90 fifth graders from Rice Elementary School in the Chula Vista Elementary School District. The interactive program was designed to underscore the importance of civic engagement to maintain a vibrant and healthy society. Read more

The program will discuss ethical and practice issues relating to fee agreements, including when written fee agreements are required and/or advisable, and what should be included in fee agreements. It also will discuss ethical and practical issues with billing time and sending out bills, including how to handle fee requests from the court and fee collection efforts. Read more
