Future Leaders in Public Law Fellowship

Welcome to the inaugural year of The Future Leaders of Public Law Fellowship. The Fellowship is a joint program managed by the California Lawyer’s Foundation and the California Lawyer’s Association’s Public Law Section.  The Foundation and the Section are dedicated to encouraging the next generation of public law practitioners and advocates.  This fellowship aims to support law students in unpaid internships at public agencies, and to open these meaningful opportunities to aspiring legal professionals needing financial support.  Selected fellow(s) will be matched with a mentor attorney from the Executive Committee for ongoing support, and write an article for the Public Law Section e-publication on their internship experience.

Pendar Salemi is a rising 3L at UC Davis School of Law and a proud double Aggie, having earned her undergraduate degree in Political Science from UC Davis. She currently interns with the San Francisco Department of Police Accountability, where she supports administrative hearings and policy research. At King Hall, Pendar is active in student government and competes on both the Negotiations and Trial Practice teams. Before and during law school, she has worked in various public service roles and is passionate about serving her community.

Mahdi Fugfugosh is a rising 2L at the University of San Francisco School of Law! Mahdi is passionate about the law and the power it holds, with a specific focus on helping the public, people of color, low-income communities, and underrepresented voices. Mahdi’s legal interests span a wide range from public interest law, civil rights, criminal law, intellectual property, and aviation. The values and guiding principles that guide Mahdi’s unrelenting commitment to public service and helping others are deeply rooted in his upbringing. As one of four siblings, Mahdi often heard his father say, “One for all, all for one,” a principle that is the ascendancy of Mahdi’s legal philosophy. Mahdi believes that what benefits one should benefit all, and that justice must be pursued with both equity and empathy, regardless of the circumstances. Mahdi is known for his outgoing personality and boundless energy, Mahdi embraces every opportunity to advocate for progress and positive change for the most vulnerable and the public in general. Mahdi is driven by the belief that the law is a powerful tool for promoting fairness, opportunity, and collective well-being, and if needed, Mahdi will be that beacon of hope for the next generation or the last soldier standing, fighting for the public, people of color, low-income communities, and underrepresented voices.
