The program will focus on special topics in traditional Chapter 11 practice. The panel will discuss recent developments and ways to avoid pitfalls in key Chapter 11 areas. Sub-chapter V will not be covered.

Speakers
KIT J. GARDNER has practiced law in California for more than 25 years. His practice emphasizes commercial bankruptcy law, small business reorganizations, and out-of-court restructurings. Kit has represented numerous business debtors, creditors and trustees in bankruptcy cases and litigation.
He has also represented businesses of all sizes in general civil litigation, including some of the nation’s largest financial institutions.
Prior to starting his own practice, Kit worked at prominent law firms in San Diego. He received his law degree from the University of California at Davis. During law school, he served as an Executive Editor of the U.C. Davis Law Review and as an intern to the Honorable Terry J. Hatter of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.
He has written articles appearing in Business Law News, the Los Angeles Daily Journal and the California Bankruptcy Journal. He also formerly served as an editor and contributor to San Diego Lawyer Magazine, writing numerous articles for the magazine.
Kit serves as Co Vice-Chair to the Insolvency Law Committee (“ILC”) of the Business Law Section of the California Lawyers Association. For the ILC, he has written many case law bulletins and appeared as a speaker on programs of interest to the legal community.
From 2012 to 2017, Kit was a Director of North Island Credit Union, a financial institution with over $3 billion in assets, holding the seat of Vice-Chair of the Board of Directors for two of those years.
Stella Havkin received her B.A. from York University in Toronto in 1984. She was awarded the honor of Magna Cum Laude and was on Dean’s List and Dean’s Honor Roll during 1980-1984. While at York, Ms. Havkin worked for the Canadian Armed Forces where she conducted statistical analyses and authored an article which was published in a NATO publication on attrition of women in the military.
Ms. Havkin received her J.D. from University of California, Hastings College of Law in 1987. While at Hastings, she was a Member of Hastings International and Comparative Law Review from 1985-1986, Associate Note Editor, 1986-1987 and the author of a published note on “The Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act: The Relationship Between the Commercial Activity Exception and the Noncommercial Tort Exception in Light of De Sanchez v. Banco Central de Nicaragua”
Ms. Havkin is a Certified Bankruptcy Specialist certified by the State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization and by the American Board of Certification. She has been a commissioner, Vice Chair and Chair with the State Bar of California Bankruptcy Legal Specialization Board for five years. Ms. Havkin is currently the President of the James T. King Bankruptcy Inn of Court.
Kristin Mihelic is a veteran insolvency attorney who serves as a federal government Trial Attorney and Adjunct Professor at the University of San Diego School of Law.
Ms. Mihelic serves as a board member/committee chair of several professional and charitable organizations. She regularly participates in continuing legal education panels and has published in the insolvency and commercial law arenas. She has been honored for her service and leadership by the San Diego Business Journal and San Diego Magazine. She previously practiced with two large law firms representing creditors, debtors and committees in chapter 11 cases and bankruptcy litigation.
Ms. Mihelic is a graduate of Northwestern University and Boston University School of Law.
Meredith King is an associate attorney at Higgs, Fletcher, & Mack, LLP where she represents business owners, corporate clients, and fiduciaries in complex construction, bankruptcy, and insolvency litigation.
Prior to joining HFM, Ms. King served as the Hon. Margaret M. Mann’s career law clerk at the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of California. She is admitted to the U.S. District and Bankruptcy Courts for Northern, Eastern, Central and Southern Districts of California.Meredith graduated cum laude from Smith College and magna cum laude from California Western School of Law, receiving Academic Merit and Creative Problem Solving scholarships.During law school, she was the Executive Editor of Lead Articles for the California Western Law Review and interned at the Department of Justice, Tax Division in Washington, D.C.
