Webinar: Managing Professionals Professionally: A Guide for Lawyers

This program will explore the ethical responsibilities of attorneys working in a law firm. Topics include;  properly maintaining a system to run conflict checks; the types of things to check for; imputation of conflicts of interest; effective ethical screens; use of contract lawyers; multijurisdictional practices; lawyers performing non-legal functions; and supervision.

Neil J Wertlieb is an experienced transactional lawyer, educator and ethicist, who provides expert witness services in disputes involving business transactions and corporate governance, and in cases involving attorney malpractice and attorney ethics.

Mr. Wertlieb is a Founding Member and current Co-Chair of California Lawyers Association Ethics Committee.  He is also a former Chair of the Business Law Section and both its Corporations Committee and Business Litigation Committee, and a former Chair of the Ethics Committees of both the California State Bar and the Los Angeles County Bar Association.

Mr. Wertlieb has practiced transactional law for over three decades, most recently as a Partner at Milbank LLP, where his practice focused primarily on acquisitions, securities offerings and restructurings.  He is currently an Adjunct Professor at UCLA School of Law, UC Berkeley School of Law, and Santa Clara School of Law, where he teaches transaction skills.  He is also a Senior Advisor, Milbank@Harvard, at Harvard Law School Executive Education, and the General Editor of Ballantine & Sterling: California Corporation Laws, a 7-volume treatise on the laws governing corporations and other business entities in California.

Mr. Wertlieb received his law degree in 1984 from the UC Berkeley School of Law, and his undergraduate degree in Management Science from the School of Business Administration also at the University of California at Berkeley.  He also served as a Judicial Extern for Justice Stanley Mosk on the California Supreme Court. Alison Buchanan is a shareholder with Hoge, Fenton, Jones & Appel, Inc., in San Jose, California, where she serves as the firm’s General Counsel and chairs the firm’s Business Litigation Practice Group. Alison focuses her practice on business litigation, professional liability, and legal ethics.

Alison is a Certified Specialist in Legal Malpractice Law, as certified by the State Bar’s Board of Legal Specialization. She is a founding member of the Ethics Committee for the California Lawyers Association, serving as the Vice Chair of Publications. From 2011 to 2014, Alison served on the California State Bar’s Committee on Professional Responsibility and Conduct (COPRAC). She previously served on the State Bar’s Legal Malpractice Law Advisory Commission.

Alison is a member of APRL (Association of Professional Responsibility Lawyers). Alison regularly speaks throughout the state on issues of attorney ethics and professional liability. She has been named a Northern California Super Lawyer from 2013 through 2021.  Alison earned her law degree from Chicago-Kent College of Law (Illinois Institute of Technology), with honors, in 2001.

In addition to her law-related endeavors, Alison proudly serves on the Board of Directors for the Humane Society Silicon Valley.
