ELS Book Club and Author Talk: Cynthia Barnett’s Rain: A Natural and Cultural History
August 29, 2023 @ 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm
Join the Environmental Law Section Summer 2023 Read-Along as we read Cynthia Barnett’s Rain: A Natural and Cultural History. If you can, join us for our virtual Book Club discussion facilitated by Jessi Fierro on Tuesday, August 29, 2023 from noon-1pm. We will be joined by author Cynthia Barnett for a presentation and Q&A!
Barnett writes, “Wrapping our bodies in Gore-Tex and our cities in giant storm gutters, humans crave mastery over the rain. Yet even in the age of precipitation-measuring satellites, Doppler radar, and twenty-four hour weather streamed to our smartphones, rain does not give up its mysteries.” (p 11). Barnett does at least partially demystify rain through this engaging journey of rain stories and science through time and across the globe. It’s an enjoyable and highly relevant read – as climate change upends rainfall patterns and unleashes increasingly severe storms and drought, rain’s history has much to tell us about coming together to adapt in stormy times, as anyone paying attention to precipitation in California in recent years knows all too well. Read along with the Environmental Law Section this summer!
