2021 ADR Hall of Fame Award
February 9, 2022 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
The Litigation Section invites everyone to join us for the presentation of the inaugural 2021 ADR Hall of Fame Award to a trailblazer in the ADR Field — Richard Chernick. The Award is presented annually for distinguished service in the promotion or development of alternative dispute resolution or for significant contributions or impact in the field of alternative dispute resolution.
Richard Chernick has helped shape the alternative dispute resolution (ADR) industry since the beginning. A Daily Journal profile describes him as “a fixture on the ADR scene since it emerged as a serious market force in the mid-‘90s.” In fact, he started even earlier, serving as the ADR Practice Leader at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP from 1987 to 1994. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the American Arbitration Association from 1989 to 1999. He held major roles at CPR from 1988 to 1996, including co-authoring its Non-Administered Arbitration Rules. He led the Los Angeles County Bar Association’s Dispute Resolution Services from 1989 to 1994, including developing and teaching its advanced mediation trainings.
Richard was recruited to JAMS in 2001 to help build and reshape its national arbitration practice. Since then, he has continued to lead the way, serving as the Vice President and Managing Director of JAMS’ Arbitration Practice, training JAMS panelists on effective arbitration practices, assuring compliance with all ethical rules and establishing and maintaining quality controls.
Richard has conducted more than 1,200 large and complex arbitrations (many of them tripartite) and many mediations before major administering institutions, both domestic and international. He is a former Chair of the Dispute Resolution Section of the American Bar Association and the Founding President of the College of Commercial Arbitrators. He served as the ABA’s Advisor to the Revised Uniform Arbitration Act. He has taught as an adjunct professor at Pepperdine Law School, UCLA Law School, and USC Gould School of Law. He is the author or co-author of leading texts on ADR, Employment ADR and international arbitration and mediation and is a frequent trainer and lecturer on arbitration and mediation topics.
The ADR Hall of Fame Award, which will be presented annually, is for distinguished service in the promotion or development of alternative dispute resolution in California and for significant contributions and impact in the field of alternative dispute resolution.
