Future Leaders in Public Law Fellowship

Welcome to the inaugural year of The Future Leaders of Public Law Fellowship. The Fellowship is a joint program managed by the California Lawyer’s Foundation and the California Lawyer’s Association’s Public Law Section.  The Foundation and the Section are dedicated to encouraging the next generation of public law practitioners and advocates.  This fellowship aims to support law students in unpaid internships at public agencies, and to open these meaningful opportunities to aspiring legal professionals needing financial support.  Selected fellow(s) will be matched with a mentor attorney from the Executive Committee for ongoing support, and write an article for the Public Law Section e-publication on their internship experience. 

The application deadline is May 15, 2025.

Eligibility

  • Applicant must be a student attending law school in California and be a student member of the CLA Public Law section.  Learn more and join today.
  • Applicant is required to secure unpaid public agency internship for summer 2025 or fall semester 2025.
  • Internship host public agency may be in California or outside of California 
  • Student to commit to exit interview by the Section on its experience, and to draft an article for the e-publication at the end of employment. 

Requirements

Application must include:

  1. Cover Letter
  2. Resume
  3. Personal essay of no more than 750-1000 words (describing your background, the internship that you have secured, and explaining your interest in Public law)
  4. Transcript
  5. Verification of unpaid employment at a public agency — This can be an offer letter, or an email from your hiring manager detailing the length and nature of your internship, and that it is unpaid
  6. Two references with one from a professor.
  7. The internship must be a minimum of 300 hours total, spread through the summer of 2025 or fall semester of 2025
