With great sadness we share news of the passing of former Vanguard Award winner and UCI Law Professor Dan Burk on February 4, 2024. He was the Distinguished and Chancellor’s Professor of Law, as well as a founding faculty member of UCI Law and the first Chancellor’s Professor at the Law School. The U.S. Copyright Office has published a notice of proposed rulemaking in the Federal Register to update its regulations by adding a new registration option for frequently updated news websites. The proposed rule will enable online news publishers to register a group of updates to a news website as a collective work. The accompanying deposit will be composed of identifying material representing sufficient portions of the works rather than the complete contents of the website. The Copyright Office is adopting a final rule amending the procedures for “smaller claims” proceedings before the Copyright Claims Board. In response to public comments, this final rule modifies a rule published on May 17, 2022. The final rule sets forth regulations governing smaller claims, which are claims seeking damages of $5,000 or less. Relative to standard CCB proceedings, smaller claims involve more limited discovery, optional written submissions, and informal conferences that call for discussion of the evidence and issues presented.
