SUCCESS IN TRIAL: THE WORK AFTER THE COURTROOM CLOSES

Written by Ese Omofoma

Every successful trial lawyer knows the work doesn’t stop when the courtroom doors close at the end of each day. Trials are not just the arguments in front of a jury; they are tests of strategy, preparation, and stamina. Much of the success achieved in trial is rooted in the work done behind the scenes — during evenings, weekends, and the early hours of each morning. The time spent analyzing, refining, and anticipating plays an essential role in shaping the outcome of a case.

Preparing for trial is like running a marathon. It demands sustained focus and energy. Just as marathon runners pace themselves and maintain their composure in the face of fatigue, we must do the same when we’re engaged in trial.

As trial approaches, the pressure to prepare can lead us to neglect our health. It’s tempting to cut corners on sleep, skip workouts, and eat junk food in the rush to get everything done. However, this is when we need to double down on good habits more than ever. It’s during these critical times that we need to prioritize the very basics that keep us sharp and resilient — rest, nutrition, and exercise. Trial requires a clear mind and steady energy, and that starts with making our health a priority. Consistent sleep every night is essential to keeping the mind sharp and energy levels steady. Without adequate rest, we’re more prone to making mistakes and losing our edge in the courtroom. It’s also important to avoid meals that make us sluggish and instead focus on meals that sustain energy and mental clarity throughout long days.
