Law Day 2025

Law Day, observed annually on May 1, is a national celebration recognizing the foundational role of the rule of law in American society. It’s a moment to reflect on the importance of justice, legal integrity, and the responsibilities entrusted to those in the legal profession. CLA is proud to be one of the organizations that is sponsoring and supporting the National Law Day of Action. Local events will be taking place throughout California and the rest of the country. CLA urges you to make every effort to attend an in-person event. Doing this as a community will be particularly meaningful. If there is not an event in your area or you simply cannot make it, we urge you to join the national virtual event by clicking here. Together, we can create a nationwide wave of support for judicial independence, the rule of law, and the independence of the legal profession.

May 1st is more than a date on the calendar—it’s a celebration of our profession. It’s a time to honor your journey as an attorney, from helping your first client to advocating in court. It’s also an opportunity to pause and remember why you entered the legal field in the first place. On behalf of the California Lawyers Association, we invite you to watch these special video messages featuring CLA President, Betty Williams, CLA Chair, Terrance J. Evans, California judges, and your colleagues across the legal community. Join us as we reflect, reconnect, and recommit to our shared values. Together, we: Connect. Lead. Achieve.

CLA Statement on the Rule of Law

Litigation is the crucible through which the rights of the People under the United States and California Constitutions are guaranteed and through which the balance inherent in our constitutional design is enforced, recognizing separation of powers and the roles of the three branches of government. Being the statewide voice of our profession, CLA endorses efforts by its members to address tactics that would suppress the essential role attorneys play in preserving our nation’s constitutional design. National Law Day of Action

The principles of judicial independence and the independence of the legal profession – cornerstones of American democracy – are facing unprecedented challenges across the country. Attacks on judges for unpopular rulings, political pressure on legal professionals, and a growing distrust of the legal system threaten the very foundation of fairness and equal justice. These aren’t abstract legal concepts. They directly impact every citizen’s ability to have their rights protected and their voices heard. When the rule of law is weakened, our entire nation suffers.
