Intellectual Property Law
Letter from the Chair
Dear IP Section Members,
I’ve been attending the IP Institute for years now, and every year I am reminded why I love the practice of IP – the intersection of technology and law gives us an everchanging practice full of new and fascinating developments. A happy side effect of this is that every year the Institute is packed with curious minds and fascinating people ready to talk about IP law. This year our conversations had a unique focus on AI, which is far from surprising given how impactful it is as a technology. For those of you that I had the good fortune to meet at the Institute, it was an absolute pleasure. If you didn’t have the chance to join us, I hope we’ll see you next year! Keep an eye out for the webinar package of the presentations at the Institute; this year was filled with not-to-be-missed panels focused on topics that will improve your practice.
I want to thank all those on the planning committee for the Institute for the work they put in to make the event a reality. Organizing an event like this can be a herculean task and their unbelievable efforts made the Institute a reality. I would also like to thank the CLA Staff for their work at the event itself.
I also want to take this opportunity to invite you all to join some of our incredible interest groups in their monthly calls. At the Institute, we had some riveting table discussions and many of the topics–and attendees—came directly from these calls. They are fantastic for up-to-date information and networking with the IP community. For the latest in what is going on in copyright, patent, AI or licensing, as well as lively discussions with California IP attorneys, you can join our Patent IG at noon on the first Tuesday of every month, our Copyright IG at noon on the first Wednesday of every month, our AI IG on the second Tuesday of each month and our Licensing and Technology Transaction IG on the second Friday of every month . These calls are a ton of fun, and I can’t recommend them highly enough.
For all those who applied for our Executive Committee, I want to thank you for your interest in the Section. Every year we get some very strong candidates, and I look forward to seeing those who were appointed in action with the Section.
As always, if you are interested in working more hands-on with IP-related programming, the simplest way is to join or volunteer with one of our many Interest Groups. We have interest groups ranging from Copyright, Patent, and Trademark to more practice-focused groups such as Entertainment and Sports Law and Technology, Internet and Privacy. There’s sure to be something to suit your particular practice. We’re also always interested in authors for New Matter if there’s a topic you’re interested in writing on!
Finally, if you have a specific topic you would be interested in seeing turned into a webinar or other programming, don’t hesitate to reach out to me. I am always only an email away and I love hearing from our members!
All the best,
Jon Lurie
