Attendees will learn about the evolving body of appellate court cases discussing the Family Code §3044 presumption in custody cases involving domestic abuse. When and how should a court apply the presumption? What findings are required when a court decides that the presumption has been rebutted? What are best practices for attorneys when representing either the petitioner or the respondent?

Shanon Quinley

Shanon Quinley, CFLS is a community college instructor. Before transitioning to teaching, she managed a solo law practice in Pasadena focused on family law. Professor Quinley plays a pivotal role in shaping family law policy as the Legislation Chair for the Family Law Executive Committee of the California Lawyers Association. She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and her J.D. from Southwestern University School of Law. She has published several book chapters and articles on California legal issues. She frequently serves as a Judge Pro Tem at the Los Angeles Superior Court.

John Chason

John B. Chason has devoted over 25 years to the practice of family law. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and Certified Family Law Specialist by the State Bar of California. He has successfully argued in the court of appeals in the published case of Ross v. Figueroa (2006) 139 Cal.App.4th 856. Rated AV Preeminent by Martindale Hubbell, Mr. Chason has been named by Super Lawyers magazine as one of the top attorneys in Southern California every year since 2015.

Attorney Fernando M. Luna was born and raised in Santa Monica, California. He graduated from the University of West Los Angeles the first in his class and is currently the founding attorney at the Law Office of Fernando M. Luna in Pasadena. In addition to running his private practice, he volunteers his work for domestic violence projects in Los Angeles and is passionate about helping his community.
