Webinar: Arbitrating and Mediating in the New Normal: Lessons Learned & Best Practices for Litigators

Eight months since the pandemic, lawyers, arbitrators and mediators have all adapted in varying degrees to resolving their clients’ disputes virtually. Going beyond the discussion about the use of various platforms, this practical session will provide litigators with insights from two full time mediators/arbitrators and a litigator who have embraced the “new normal” and who will provide real-world examples and best practices they have encountered that worked well for advocates, assist in preparing clients for a video hearing and created a setting that is conducive to the new virtual reality.

Ruth V. Glick is a full time domestic and international arbitrator and with over 25 years’ experience as a dispute resolver.  She has mediated and arbitrated a wide variety of domestic and international complex business contract and tort, financial, commercial, technology, venture capital, trade secrets, securities, labor and employment, real estate, health care and medical device disputes.  She is on the Large and Complex Case panel, the National, Commercial and Labor and Employment Arbitration and Mediation panels of the American Arbitration Association (AAA), as well as the International Centre for Dispute Resolution (ICDR), the International Institute for Conflict Prevention & Resolution (CPR) and American Health Lawyers Association (AHLA).

She is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FIArb), a Fellow of the College of Commercial Arbitrators (CCA), a Distinguished Fellow of the International Academy of Mediators (IAM), and an International Mediation Institute (IMI) Certified Mediator.  

A Northern California Super Lawyer, Ruth is a past Chair of the Dispute Resolution Section of the American Bar Association,.   She currently serves as a member of the Council of the American Arbitration Association-International Centre for Dispute Resolution (AAA-ICDR).  For more information see www.ruthvglick.com.

Hon. Ellen Sickle James (Ret.) is a full time mediator and arbitrator at JAMS. A nationally known and respected neutral, Judge James as mediated hundreds of disputes and serves as a special master and arbitrator on complex commercial, real estate, insurance coverage, construction and wills and trust matters.  Since the pandemic, Judge James has successfully virtually mediated and arbitrated disputes involving personal injury, ERISA, employment, real property and product liability matters.  Prior to joining JAMS, Judge James served over twenty years on the bench, including as the Presiding Judge, Civil Division, on the Contra Costa County Superior Court.  A frequent lecturer for the ABA and other local bar associations and a former adjust professor at Boalt Hall School of Law, University of CA, Judge James is a member of JAMS’ Gender Task Force and a member of the ABA Dispute Resolution Section’s Committee on Mediator Ethical Guidance.

Raul F. Salinas is the Managing Shareholder at AlvaradoSmith’s Los Angeles office. A seasoned litigator, Mr. Salinas leads a team of attorneys representing large national and multi-national corporations, government agencies, and small businesses in state and federal courts. Mr. Salinas also argued a number of appellate matters before the California Supreme Court.  In 1993, Mr. Salinas founded the California Hispanic Corporate Council Leadership Institute and serves on the boards of the US Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles, Adventis Health White Memorial Medical Center, La Plaza de Cultura y Artes, and the Los Angeles Latino Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Salinas was the former commissioner for the State Bar Judicial Nominees Evaluation (JNE) Commission and also a past member of the Board of Directors for the California Minority Counsel Program. In 2019, Mr. Salinas received the Humanitarian Award from the Hollenbeck Police Activities League from the Los Angeles Police Department.  

Serena K. Lee is the General Manager for JAMS’ San Francisco, Santa Rosa and Seattle Resolution Centers.  Prior to joining JAMS, Ms. Lee served as the Vice President – Commercial Division at the American Arbitration Association (AAA).An active member of the ABA Dispute Resolution Section and the CA Lawyers Association’s ADR Committee, Ms. Lee also serves as the co-chair of the Asian Bar of Greater Bay Area (AABA) Education Committee and also as the ABA Business Litigation Dispute Resolution’ Committee’s co-chair for Publications.  Ms. Lee was a former board member of the Asian Bar Association of Washington (ABAW) in Seattle, and received her Juris Doctorate and her mediation certification from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law’s Kukin Program for Conflict Resolution.Ms. Lee is an active member of the New York state bar, 1st Judicial Dept.
