International arbitration is one of the best methods to resolve cross-border business disputes because of its flexibility, fairness, and the world-wide enforceability of arbitral awards. This program provides an overview and sets the stage for this year’s California International Arbitration Week (March 9-12, 2026).

Laura C. Abrahamson, Esq., brings extensive domestic and international ADR experience dealing with commercial conflicts, particularly in the energy, engineering, construction and chemicals industries, to her practice as a full time arbitrator and mediator with JAMS. Prior to joining JAMS in 2020, Ms. Abrahamson served for five years as Senior Vice President, Deputy General Counsel and Global Head of Disputes at AECOM, an American multinational firm that provides engineering, design, consulting and construction services, where she oversaw complex, cross-border disputes. Previously, Ms. Abrahamson spent nearly 20 years in-house at Occidental Petroleum (OXY), where she led major litigation and domestic and international arbitration efforts.
A Chartered Arbitrator of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) and a Fellow of the College of Commercial Arbitrators, Ms. Abrahamson is currently serving as President of California Arbitration (“CalArb”), on the board of the CIArb North American Branch, and as Co-Chair of California International Arbitration Week. Ms. Abrahamson has been appointed as an arbitrator or mediator on more than 200 matters and is a panelist on multiple domestic and international arbitration centers, including the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC); the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA); the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC), the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and California’s Public Works Contract Arbitration Program (PWCA).
Ms. Abrahamson holds a degree in business administration from the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley, with a dual major in accounting and finance, and a J.D. from the UCLA School of Law.

Jeff Daar, the current President of CalArb, is a principal of the law firm Daar & Newman. As a lawyer Jeff has more than 25 years of extensive experience in cross-border disputes in both courts and arbitrations. He also serves as an arbitrator in international and domestic arbitrations, including for the International Centre for Dispute Resolution (ICDR), Japan Commercial Arbitration Association (JCAA), Vancouver International Arbitration Centre (VanIAC), Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration (SCIA), South China International Arbitration Center (HK) (SCIAHK), and the American Arbitration Association (AAA). Jeff and his firm are one of the Best Lawyers in America® – for the field of International Arbitration – Commercial.

Marcus Quintanilla serves as arbitrator, mediator, and counsel in domestic and international commercial disputes – often in cases involving technology and engineering, intellectual property, or construction and energy projects. He handles cases in English and Spanish and is experienced in both Common Law and Civil Law. He maintains arbitration chambers in San Francisco and Houston. Marcus is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and sits on the rosters of the ICDR, the AAA’s Commercial, Construction, Energy, and Consumer divisions, the Singapore International Arbitration Centre, the Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration, the Energy Disputes Arbitration Center in Ankara, Turkey, and the Korean Commercial Arbitration Board (KCAB International). He teaches international ADR and intellectual property at UC Davis Law School and holds leadership roles in a range of professional groups including the ABA, the California Lawyers Association, and California Arbitration, Inc. (CalArb).
Alongside his current work as a neutral, Marcus is Of Counsel at Umberg Zipser LLP, where he represents clients in arbitration and cross-border litigation matters. He is licensed to practice in California, Texas, and New York.
