Leonard Gumport

Leonard Gumport has served as a mediator for more than 25 years. His mediations have involved bankruptcy, business, regulatory, and consumer disputes, including class actions and government enforcement proceedings.

Leonard is a member of the panels of mediators maintained by the ADR Programs of the U.S. District Court and the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Central District California.

Leonard is Chair of the Legislation Subcommittee of the Insolvency Law Committee (ILC) of the Business Law Section (BLS) of the California Lawyers Association (CLA).

A highlight for Leonard was preparing the ILC’s amicus brief in the Purdue Pharma case in the U.S Supreme Court. During an intense two-month period, the brief went through approximately 15 drafts and countless revisions by members of the ILC, the BLS, and the CLA’s Amicus Briefs Committee. Subsequently, Leonard has written and spoken about the Purdue Pharma case.

Before becoming a full-time mediator, Leonard did business and bankruptcy litigation, including trials and internal investigations. He also served as a bankruptcy trustee, SIPC trustee, bankruptcy examiner, and provisional director. He is admitted to practice in Alaska, California, New York, and the District of Columbia.

Leonard grew up in New York City. His father was a professor of surgery at NYU, and his mother was a science teacher at Dalton School. Leonard met his wife, Wendy, in Portland, Oregon, while they were clerking for different federal judges. Leonard and Wendy live in Pasadena and have two daughters, Anna and Mary.
