Environmental Law
Message From the Chair

Hello ELS,
April | Earth Day and Service
Since the first Earth Day in 1970, when millions of Americans mobilized to demand a healthier environment, this month has symbolized the power of collective action to drive lasting change. We are also reminded by the Artemis II launch of the unique perspective we gain when we step back and see Earth as a shared, fragile home—one that demands stewardship across borders and disciplines.
This Earth Day, the California Lawyers Association Environmental Law Section (“ELS”) reaffirms its commitment to environmental stewardship, equity, and justice through the law. This month, we feature three free events.
- On April 3, ELS is co-sponsoring the UCLA Emmett Institute 2026 Spring Symposium in Los Angeles entitled “Can Abundance Be Sustainable? Merging Affordability and Climate Policy”. The symposium will bring together policymakers, academics, and advocates for critical discussions on how to achieve environmental goals as we face rising costs. The program features a keynote by CPUC President John Reynolds and panels on electricity and the grid, the fossil fuel transition, and the intersection of housing and environmental policy.
- On April 20, we also celebrate the 2026 Goldman Prize Awards Ceremony in San Francisco. The Goldman Environmental Prize, often referred to as the “Green Nobel”, recognizes grassroots environmental champions from six global regions for extraordinary efforts to protect and restore the natural environment. As space is limited, those interested in attending are encouraged to submit a request for invitation as soon as possible and note their affiliation with CLA.
- Finally, we are proud to spotlight Communities for a Better Environment, our 2025 Trailblazer Award recipient. CBE’s advocacy at the intersection of environmental protection and community empowerment reflects true service to both people and the planet. Join us for a special webinar on April 22 “Community-led Lawyering Winning Environmental Justice Protections” celebrating CBE’s work and legal apprenticeship program, which is expanding access to the profession and cultivating future environmental leaders.
As environmental lawyers, our role is not only to advocate, but to serve—protecting people and planet. Thank you for your continued dedication to this vital work. Happy Earth Day.
