Chair’s Note
New Year, New Challenges: Leaning Into Connection
A few months ago, I dusted off my LinkedIn login and signed back into my quiet account. I was never very active on social media. But as this year’s Chair of the New Lawyers Section, I figured now’s as good a time as any to start!
I’ll be honest: this is uncomfortable. I’ve never been active on social media, I don’t love public writing or speaking, and as a public sector attorney, I don’t have the same pressure to do this as I did in the private sector. But I’m back on the socials for the same reason I’m involved with NLS and the wider California Lawyers Association – to connect on a human level with other folks who are in these (sometimes uncomfortable) shoes.
I’ve been surprised by how enjoyable and rewarding this has been, even as an introvert. While California is a big state, the legal community is surprisingly “small.” It’s not six degrees of Kevin Bacon – it’s at most maybe one or two!
As we kick off the new year, I want to invite you to join me in leaning into connection. As new lawyers, we’re building careers in a dynamic, ever-changing profession – now more than ever. Take a risk and try something new. You just might surprise yourself too!
NLS is here to support you on that journey. We have exciting events coming up: networking mixers, CLE programs, and leadership opportunities designed to help you grow and connect. These aren’t just about learning; they’re about building relationships and finding your community.
So, whatever 2026 might look like for you, we’re cheering you on! Here’s to a year of bold moves, meaningful growth, and shared success. Let’s make it happen – together.
Daniel Cheung, Chair,
New Lawyers Section
